President urges Russia to support the peace plan with deeds and not just words
28 June 2014 11:52

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko urged the Russian Federation to make tangible steps to support the peace plan in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It was stated by him in the course of delivering the speech to the PACE.

"Please support the peace plan with deeds and not just words. With deeds, we can stop the deaths of military and civilian people who uphold and defend the territorial integrity and unity of the country, so we await those actions. Strengthen the border control. Stop the illegal infiltration of military vehicles into Ukraine. Stop recruiting mercenaries and, finally, pull back military forces from the border," the President of Ukraine said.

Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to the PACE for the immediate response to military aggression. "Ukraine certainly needs it," the Head of State noted.

At the same time, the President stressed that Europe doesn't have a real mechanism to defend peace. "The question "who is next?" is still open. That's why Europe should demonstrate unity and solidarity today," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

The President noted that Ukraine counters Russia with confidence and moral power.

Petro Poroshenko noted that with the assistance of the international organizations, all violations of ceasefire regime are being documented and they must receive an adequate response from the international community.

The President emphasized that his peace plan was supported by all countries of the world. "At the same time, it is clear that the peace plan will work only if Russia plays along," he added.

The Head of State noted that during the phone conversation with Chancellor Merkel and President Hollande, President Putin pledged his support for the peace plan. "We now hope that real progress will be made," he said.

The President stressed that Ukraine "is going through a time of challenge, but also a time of hope". "Our way is towards the European Union. That is why tomorrow, 27 June, I, as President of Ukraine, will sign the Association Agreement with the European Union. We will start implementing this Agreement immediately after signing it," the Head of State said.

"The European Union is a success story for us – a state model and time-tested sequence of reforms," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

According to the President, Ukraine will surely seize this historic chance for the "reforms are long overdue".

At the same time he noted that the state will not discuss some key issues: Ukraine is a unitary state with one official language plus multiple regional languages which continues its European integration path. "Everything else can be subject to wide public debate, and I can assure you that such debates are already under way," the Head of State said.
