Over the years of its existence, the Venice Commission has prepared more than 150 opinions and expert assessments on draft laws and laws of Ukraine.
The Venice Commission actively participated in the implementation of constitutional reform, judicial reform, considered and analyzed such important legal acts as the Law "On Government Cleansing” (Lustration Law), "On the condemnation of the communist and national socialist (Nazi) regimes and prohibition of propaganda of their symbols, "On education", "On supporting the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language" etc.
The full list of the Commission's opinions on our country is available on the Commission's website.
The Venice Commission played an important role in 2014 at the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The Commission adopted two decisions:
- regarding the inconsistency with the constitutional principles of the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to organize a so-called "referendum" on joining Russia;
- on the inconsistency with international law of the draft amendments to the federal constitutional law on the procedure for admission to the Russian Federation and creation of a new subject of the federation.
The Commission defended the principles of international law and criticized both mentioned documents.
These documents of the Venice Commission became a significant contribution to the formation of the international legal position on the non-recognition of Russia's illegal annexation of the part of the territory of Ukraine.
