The Council of Europe was founded on 5 May 1949 by 10 states - Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom, France and Sweden, later Greece and Turkey acceded to this Organisation. The Council of Europe now has 46 member states.
