Opening of the photo exhibition "Beyond Borders: Ukraine's Untold Stories" at the Council of Europe
25 January 2024 13:06

Today we had the pleasure of opening of the photo exhibition "Beyond Borders: Ukraine's Untold Stories" at the Council of Europe. Organised by Ms Leyla Kayacik, Special Representative of the Secretary General for Migration and Refugees, and the Permanent Representation of Ukraine to the Council of Europe, this exhibition is a powerful testament to the resilience and hope of those affected by the russian aggression against Ukraine.

Following Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, Europe has witnessed its largest population displacement since the Second World War.? This exhibition, which runs from 22-26 January 2024, captures the heartbreaking stories of the millions of people, mostly women and children, who have sought protection beyond Ukraine's borders.

The Council of Europe's talented photographer Sandro Weltin has brilliantly documented their journeys, highlighting the difficult choices, resilience and undying hope of those who had to leave their homes and loved ones behind. These images are not just photographs; they are a window into the souls of those who are fighting for a better future.

The inauguration speech by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe was deeply moving. Among the highlighted works is a photograph that beautifully captures the dual nature of the current situation: children in an improvised playroom, a scene of tranquility against a backdrop of upheaval. This image exemplifies the adaptable spirit of the young, finding comfort and joy in simple moments, and represents the resilience and hope we hold for Ukraine's future.

This exhibition is more than just a display; it's a reflection of the hardship, strength and unbreakable spirit of those affected. It's a reminder of the Council of Europe's commitment to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. As the Permanent Representative poignantly said, "It is a moving reminder of the solidarity of the Council of Europe's member states with Ukraine, a solidarity that goes beyond words and into the realm of heartfelt support and action".
