Local authorities intensify cooperation with the Council of Europe
On 16 October 2017 the representatives of local authorities of Ukraine began a working study visit to the Council of Europe. The members of the Ukrainian delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, their deputies, as well as mayors of cities involved in the implementation of individual projects in the field of local self-government take part in the event which will last until the 20th October.
The participants will have the opportunity to review the statutory work of the Congress, exchange experience and knowledge about local and regional democracy and expand their ties both at the national and European levels.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Dmytro Kuleba, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe noted the leading role of the Congress and expressed gratitude to President Gudrun Mosler-Törnström for her special attention to Ukraine and for assistance in the implementation of the decentralization reform, emphasizing that the recommendations of the Council of Europe regarding this issue are being already widely adopted in Ukraine.
The study visit takes place within the framework of the project "Promoting Local Democracy in Ukraine", which has been implemented by the Congress from 2015 in the framework of the Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017. The main goal of the study visit is to improve the implementation of democratic principles in Ukraine by strengthening institutional and leadership capacities of local elected authorities and disseminating best practices in local democracy nation-wide.
